Jonathan Carroll is an emerging scholar and educator. His main research revolves around teacher education, racial identity, multicultural education, and the relationship between law enforcement and schooling. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University California Los Angeles (UCLA) Graduate School of Education and Information Sciences (GSE&IS). You can follow the ways he makes sense of life as an academic on his
weekly blog entitled CLASS IS IN SESSION.
Â
Jonathan grew up in Philadelphia and is the oldest of three children in a family full of educators. He studied anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania with the hopes of becoming a pediatrician, but gave in to his genes and pursued a career in education upon graduation in 1999. He later earned a Masters in Education at Drexel University and served as an elementary classroom teacher for four years before entering his doctoral program in 2006. It was during his time as a teacher that Jonathan became an author, writing the popular children’s book,
Meet Julius Carmichael: First Day Blues.

In addition to his scholarly work, Jonathan continues to find ways to stay connected with students. He is in the process of developing Class Is In Session, a non-profit organization dedicated to mentoring and tutoring high school males of color to ensure that they matriculate to college.
