The Young Black Men’s Photovoice Project is a community-based participatory research project made possible through the collaboration of community leaders and academics supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at UCLA. Photovoice is a participatory health promotion strategy utilizing photographs taken by individuals to promote critical reflection, enhance group discussion, share knowledge, create empowerment, and reach policy makers.
The young men share photographs that convey the major themes identified and discussed as influential in their transition to manhood. They identified four major themes influential in their transition: struggles, social supports and inspiration, role of sports, and LA lifestyle. Each of these themes has several sub-themes: for example, struggles includes police harassment, incarceration, institutional racism, lack of financial and employment stability, homelessness, community violence, urban decay and family challenges in the foster care system.
